Ten+ years ago my best friend Heather and I had a tradition of going downtown Chicago every Christmas to see the Macy's tree and to the Christkindlmarket. Besides a brief walk through last year, it's been a very long time since I've gone to the market but made a return Tuesday night. We picked a good night, because the weather was warm(er) and the crowd wasn't too bad.
The market is fashioned after a traditional German market with little booths and lots of goodies to buy. And a beautiful, giant decorated tree. It's the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit.
The booths filled with gifts barely outnumbers the ones filled with food... there are many, many delicious things to eat at Christkindlmarket. Sausages, potato pancakes, crepes, strudel, schnitzel, stollen, pretzels. It's endless. We opted for bratwurst and then little donuts with hot chocolate. But I'm still dreaming of some roasted nuts, because that's the sweet smell that fills the air as you walk around.
I was so glad to make a trip back to the market after missing it for many years. It was even better than I remembered. I think most Chicagoans will agree that this is one of their favorite holiday traditions that's provided years of good, heartwarming, delicious memories. I know it will always be one of mine.
