My wonderful friends Jessica + Scott came to New York for a much deserved vacation. I miss seeing them and was so happy to finally have them in my city! They're both vegan (well, they conceeded to vegetarian for the trip so they could enjoy some Artichoke pizza) and so I made us a dinner reservation at Dirt Candy.
Dirt Candy is this tiny little restaurant in the East Village with only nine tables and a little dinner menu with only nine items. It is all vegetarian and the dishes can be made vegan. It also had the worst red dim lighting so my attempts at food photos were foiled.
The food, however, was really good. For dessert I tried this tasty dish called popcorn pudding - it was a yummy combination of sugar and salt. If I could get a seat, I'd definitely make another trip back to Dirt Candy. And hopefully accompanied by my dear friends! I love these two. In my perfect world, we would be next door neighbors who share Friday night dinner parties and stay up late playing Scrabble (and then Jess + I scrapbook all Saturday morning.)
Since it's now September, I've ended my month of (attempting) vegetarianism. It was hard. Especially when I was traveling and eating out with friends. I missed meat. But when I started to get back to my regular eating habits, I decided that I will stay veg for the most part. After my doubts, I discovered that I did feel better without the meat, mostly proven by how I felt when I started eating it again. My first cheeseburger (which was a Five Guys delicious patty) made me feel gross and sat heavily in my stomach. I think meat and I will be distant friends, instead of the constant companions we once were. And I'm ok with that.
