Last Saturday my friend Larisa and I went on a field trip to the South Side for a food adventure. First stop, Calumet Bakery where we picked up doughnuts. She had worked down there and had been telling me that these were the best. Two doughnuts for $1.70. And they were delicious. Sold.
Our next stop was Top Notch for hamburgers. I'd caught a show on the best burgers in Chicago and they had featured Top Notch. It's an old school diner that boasts one hell of a burger.
It's a very simple burger, nothing fancy. But it was definitely the closest to my beloved Shake Shack that I've had in this city. And cheap too... we had burgers + fries, homemade chicken noodle soup, and large fountain sodas (swoon!) for $20. I kinda like this place a lot.
Top Notch is a bit out of the way, but there's a reason it's been around since 1954, is Zagat rated, and still getting lots of press. I'll vouch for this burger any time! Now who has another burger for me to try?
